In 2019 due to culling live pigs with swine fever, pork price in China overshot on the upside.

In accordance with latest released date by China’s Ministry of Commerce, total imports of pork to China reached 1.16 million tons from beginning of this year till the end of August with 40.4% rise year on year, which almost equal to whole year imports as 1.19 million tons from 2018. As substitute, imports of beef, mutton and poultry had 49.3-53.6% increase. With MOFCOM’s policy “encourage pork import growth to ensure the stable meat supply in Chinese market”, How big is potential we can expect?

Two million tons import to be in 2019 is a small percentage against 54 million tons domestic annual production from 2018. As the biggest meat market in the world, China consumes more than half total pork production every year. Importing of meat in last ten years to China by an increasing trend but has not exceed 3% of full consumption in average.

In terms of global supply for export of pork the trade volume in last year went up slightly and reached 8.1 million tons. The main export regions are EU (3.05 million tons), USA (2.72 million tons) and Canada (1.35 million tons) with 83.37% market share in worldwide. Statistically it can be easily digested within Chinese market.

Due to close concern between meat imports and disease hazards GACC implements registration system for enterprises who intend to export and sell their meat products to China. Overseas enterprises shall comply with legislation, regulation and standard of exporting country or region, and meet the equivalent requirements of China-related legislation, regulation and standard. The enterprises shall be recommended to China General Administration of Customs (GACC) after being inspected and qualified by competent authority of exporting country or region.
